Liar's Paradox

The liars paradox: How do we understand the statement: "This sentence is a lie". Anyway we interpret it, it leads to a contradiction. This paradox appears in various forms as the particle / wave paradox, the double bind, ...

We have named these phenomenon paradoxes and contradictions. However, it may be instructive to unravel the change.

  • Assume that there are no contradictions in nature / reality / existence. Everything is just fine, thank you!
  • Hence any contradictions / paradoxes we run into are of our own making.
  • Let us unravel "This sentence is a lie".
    • If it is true, it is false. If it is false, it is true. Contradiction is obvious.
    • We have created notions of false or true that are separate and disjoint. A thing cannot be both true and false. Perhaps this is where the problem lies. A thing can be both false and true. How is this possible?
      • For example a 3d object can cast both a circle shadow and a square shadow. However, in 2d an object can't be both a square and a circle.
      • If we take our notion of true and false to be in 2d. Then there is a higher dimension in which an entity can be both true and false depending on the perspective one takes on it.
